Sunday 14th June, 1998
Our next tournament was Savage Sevens. I had heard many rumours about this tournament, mostly relating to the name. I heard that it has been played in miserable, cold, wet weather (hence the name savage) The idea of this tournament is that you have a team of 7 players (2 girls, 5 guys), and they must be on the field all the time (ie no subs!). Each game lasts for 27 minutes or until one team scores 7 points.
The day started early, and COLD. As it turned out, though, it was a GLORIOUS day in Centennial Park. We had a few problems getting our third team together, so we sent down two teams and a few extras (18 in all). There were 16 teams in all, so we got split into 4 groups to play round-robin style. The extras were given away two the 2 Wollongong teams and Macquarie.
By lunch, NUdiscs #1 had won one of their 3 games, while NUdiscs #2 hadn't won any. The 16 teams were re-arranged based on their results to play another round-robin series. This time NUdiscs #1 lost 3 times, while NUdiscs #2 beat Wollongong #1 in a very close game (I should know, I was on the Wollongong team!. The teams were tied at 6-6 so we went to 10 points. NUdiscs then won 10-8).
That was it for the Newcastle players. We stayed for the semis and final (actually, some went to get some beer!), then we headed home, after another wonderful tournament.
