Home Up

31st May 2000 (again!)

Don't forget that as well as Savage Sevens coming up on the 12th, there is an IV (Intervarsity or Inter-University) tournament on the 18th. This is being hosted by ACU (Australian Catholic University). Starts at 9am on the Gore Hill fields (Sydney). Cost will be $5 + transport costs (this will be by car if we have enough cars, otherwise by train). IVs are great tournaments, and would be a good opportunity for the AUC team to get in a few practice games before going to Adelaide. See Sturt or Matt if you want to go.

31st May 2000

I've added a page on AUC 2000 (the Adelaide trip). You can get to it from here, or via the tournaments page (link above). It contains a summary of all the details of the trip (that we know of), as well as any latest information. Make sure to keep an eye on it, as well as your email for updates.

30th May 2000

From Sturt via email:

Hi guys,
I have some more information about savage sevens and auc if you are interested. I now have enough people for the two teams entered, and it will be held on the 12th of June not the 13th. As I said before, precedence will be given to those going to Auc. However, if you're not going don't give up because there are still a few spots available and once the teams have been worked out I will send round the preliminary teams. Again, your $10 dollars would be appreciated asap, and if you don't have a shirt you will need to talk to matt or myself about getting one. There is also another tournament being held in sydney the weekend after savage sevens and is sort of a warm up to AUC. If the Auc team (or even others) wanted to go it would be a very good experience because it would allows us to play as a whole team for the first time,
and get used to playing together. If people are willing to go (which I hope they are) I will need to know very soon so the team and entry can be organised.

But wait there's more.

For people going to Auc, I have reserved some accommodation at the Adelaide backpackers. We will have 3 four person units with all linen (donas and bedding) supplied, as well as continental breakfast (6-11am),free tea and coffee, complimentary diner one night, complimentary desert every night and 24 hour access. The cost is $50 per unit per night, so we are looking at about $15 each per night. The only bad thing about this accommodation is that it is in the middle of Adelaide so we will have to catch a bus every day (about $1), or we could possibly use the minibus the backpackers have. The good thing is that we don't have to walk very far home when they have the pub crawl, and we are close to food places and so forth.

I need to know whether people want to stay saturday night and leave on sunday (get home monday) or leave on saturday night (get home late sunday night). If we want to leave saturday night we will probably have to check out that morning and take all our stuff with us to the games. This may be a little inconvenient. If we leave on sunday we can go home and have a shower and a good night sleep and then leave at about midday. The only problem with this is that people may have stuff on monday that they don't want to miss. Being the first day of semester, there's probably not too much to worry about.

The other thing is that if we stay another night it will be more expensive. If we catch the bus on sunday it will be about $8 cheaper than if we go saturday night (different bus company) but the accommodation will be about $15. So an extra night will be about another $7. Personally I think this is probably the better option, but I need to know from the people who are  going what they would prefer. And soon. If you have any problems about the accommodation or
about getting back on monday, or about it being too expensive too stay another night, I need to know. Otherwise I will go ahead and book the accommodation and travel.

Once this has been done I will send round a preliminary estimate of the costs so that you know how much you have to pay, and so you can start paying. Remember, there are still a couple of spots left for anyone not going. So if you have all of a sudden realised how much fun you're going to be missing out on, now is the time to do something about it.

See you on wednesday night when it will be hopefully wind free.

28th May 2000

From Sturt via email:

Hi guys,
I have just received some good news that we now have an opens teams as well as a mixed team entered for savage sevens. So now all we need are 14 people to go. If you are going to AUC I strongly recommend that you go, especially if this is the first time you have gone to a tournament. You will learn alot about your strengths and weaknesses, the speed at which the game is played and many other valuable lessons that you only get in a tournament situation. Needless to say, you will also have alot of fun. The day will cost $10, which includes lunch. As far as transport goes, if we have enough cars we will drive (speak up if you have one), but the most likely option is the train. Also, if you want to go to savage sevens or AUC, you must be a member so that you are insured. This is a measly $5. If you don't have a shirt you will also need one. They are $14, and you will need to talk to Matt kelly about that (or if you are lazy you can tell me and I will talk to him). As I have already mentioned, we have fourteen spots for savage seven that need to be filled. Below I have listed all the people who I can think of who would be able to go. If your name is on here and you would like to go, write back and I will confirm it. If your name is on here and you can't go, write back and I'll take it off. If your name isn't on here and you would like to go, write back and I will put it on. I think that covers everyone. If we have more than fourteen people willing to go (which I hope we will) precedence will be given to those going to AUC, and the other spots will be done by the selectors based on skill, enthusiasm, and how often you turn up. Again, even if you don't think you'll make the teams but want to go, write back and tell me. You never know. Your $10 would also be appreciated asap to help finalise the matter. The date is the Monday of the long weekend (monday of second week of exams), the 13 of june - I think, and will be at centenary park in Sydney. If you want to go to AUC we still have a couple of spots left which we would REALLY like filled. ESPECIALLY by one or two more girls. If you know anyone who would like to go, please tell us. They don't have to be a super player, just someone who wants to go to Adelaide and have some fun  while playing Frisbee and meeting new people. It doesn't get too much better tha that. So get you responses back asap, study hard, and I'll see you on monday.

A couple of messages from Sturt:

1. If you are interested in going to Savage Sevens (details below), contact Sturt ASAP. Transport will be by cars (if there are enough), otherwise via train, which will cost around $15 return.

2. AUC deposits are due this week. Sturt would like $50, but given the short notice, $20 will suffice. Refunds will be given if you later decide you cannot go. However, please don't pull out at the last minute, there are plenty of things to organise (selection, training, transport, accommodation) and someone pulling out can create extra headaches for everyone concerned.

22nd May 2000

I was going to do a write-up about the excellent tourney at Lennox Head on the weekend, but I might just leave it up to  one of the organisers - Aaron:

Thanks to all of those who came along to the Dawning on the weekend,
major fun was had by all and we think that it could be even better next
year so if you are planing anyhting for next year make sure it involves the
East Oz Ultimate Dawning.

Well it just goes to show you that when you get a bunch of old b'stards
together give them a disc and then place a group of younger guys at the
other end we can still kick some ass. This was proven on the weekend with
the Wheelchairs beating the young Wippersnappers by a rather convincing
margin. But it wasn't about winning it was more about haveing fun and it
was agreed that we might let them win next year?!?!?!? (maybe). Some games
where played down on the loverly soft sand that Lennox Head loves to proide
for us and there were mass opportunities for the horizontal flyer's to take
to the air and partake in their fovourite pasttime.

Saturday was sunny and the disc's where flying (as was the players).
The weather was perfect and everyone was haveing a ball(or is that 'a
disc'). We had a 'slap-up' BBQ  for tea (thanks to Nick and myself), and it
was later on the night that we discovered two new god's the sister and
brother, Footzagog and Mahansagog, and much conversation was had about both
of these two new god's and who and where they came from (we guessed some
Yin & Yang thingy). It is still unsure however as to whether Chelsea won
the F.A. cup final because of these new gods or not. But we recon that's
why they did.

Sunday was a day of rest-----------until we thought of haveing another
game and then that was it, two teams and approximately 50 combined points
later we decided to brake for lunch. During this game many things fell
apart while other things came together. There where major D's happening by
both teams Mr Flanagan had about three hand blocks, Josh pulled off a
beautiful footblock, i did a layout D in the inzone, Nick REJECTED Greg
lYnn's attempt at a long bomb, as well as many other outstanding plays( OH!
yes and Matty Anscombe came back to us and found out that, if you
haven't played for along time DON'T do a layout in your first point(it
hurts)).

Goodbyes were said to all on sunday arvo and we all departed the fields a
little worse for wear but glad we came for the Dawning.

I got a few surprised looks when I told people I had come from Newcastle just for the tournament. (In fact, some didn't even know we had a uni!). I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend (even if it means I'll be sleeping for the next two days), and highly recommend it to anyone thinking of going next year. Apart from getting there and back, it is a cheap tournament, with around $50 covering meals, a bed (yes, a real bed), and plenty of disc for the entire weekend. There were even masseuses available! East Oz is a great, and very relaxed tourney that is worth the trip.

Andrew (Ollie) :)

Just a quick message for anyone who is
interested in going to AUC, we will need to get
deposits in the next week or so - probably about $50,
but it might be $20. So keep this in mind. We'll
probably talk more about it on Monday night, and I'll
most likely be sending around more messages.
Also, we still need more girls so try to bring along
any friends and people you think who might be willing
to go.
see you on monday night

17th May 2000

Savage sevens is coming....

When: Monday 12th June (Queen's Birthday holiday)

Where: Centennial Park, Sydney

How much: $10 plus transport (to be organised)

Details: This is a great tournament that is held every year - just ask some of the experienced players. Teams are seven-a-side (4/3 gender split) with no subs. Games are 27 minutes or 7 points (whichever comes first). Buns, dip and sunscreen are provided. Should be another great trip to Sydney.

Contact: Email Matt is you're interested.

10th May 2000

I have some more details on the East Oz Ultimate Dawning tournament from organiser Nick Garbutt.

When: 20th/21st May 2000 (there will be drinks on Friday night, for anyone who turns up early).

Where: Lake Ainsworth Sport & Recreation Centre, Lennox Head.

Cost: $40 plus transport and food.

This tournament is described as 'the most relaxed and easy going tournament in existence". Based on that, it's a great opportunity for new players. It is a hat tournament, meaning that teams are allocated by drawings names out of a hat (so you don't need a team to go). Applications are accepted up until games begin on the Saturday morning. Games consist of Beach Ultimate. Accommodation is provided in the dorms at the sport & rec centre (including stove, fridge, showers, toilet, tv). Games are expected to begin around 9:30 or 10am on Saturday and end around 3pm on Sunday.

Getting There: This won't be easy, since Lennox is quite some distance from Newcastle. If you have a car, it should take you around 7 hours to get there. An alternative is via train. The CountryLink XPT travels from Broadmeadow (Newcastle) to Lismore and Casino with a connecting coach to Lennox Head. The coach stop in Lennox is about 1km from the sport & rec centre. The cost is $162 return for adults and $97.20 return for students. The appropriate trains / coaches are:

Depart Broadmeadow                        Arrive Lennox Head

Fri 9:16am                                        Fri 7:45pm*

Fri 6:36pm                                       Sat 5:01am

Depart Lennox Head                          Arrive Broadmeadow

Sun 9:20pm                                       Mon 8:12am

*Note: I'm not sure whether the accommodation includes Friday night. If you are planning to get there on Friday, let me know, or email Nick (see below).

The other alternative is to catch a coach from Newcastle, but I have been unable to find one that stops in Lennox Head. The closest I've found is in Ballina, but this would require finding a friend up there to take you to Lennox Head and return.

Contacting the organisers:

See the entry on www.afda.com/cgi-bin/tournaments/tourney.cgi or contact Nick Garbutt (ngarbu10@scu.edu.au).

Finally, you can see me at frisbee, or email me (aolennick@starmail.com).

Hope to see a few friendly faces at Lennox,

Andrew (Ollie) :)

9th May 2000

It's a couple of days late, but ....... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! The NUdiscs turned two last Sunday.

8th May 2000

In case you missed it in What's On?, there is a BBQ this Friday, at the Squash Pavilion (adjacent to #1 Oval) at 6:30pm. Cost is $2 for members, and $3 for non-members, and includes drinks.

6th May 2000

There was a great article about Ultimate Frisbee in today's Newcastle Herald. It's on page 3 of the Weekend section, and includes colour photos of some of our members. Make sure to grab a copy.

3rd May 2000

Andrew Pennington is running training sessions each Wednesday. This is a must for anyone interested in going to Adelaide, but also useful for anyone else who wants to learn/re-learn some warm-up techniques, and go through some drills to hone their skills. Please be at #1 Oval by 7pm so we can go through the warm-up, drills and still have time for a game. The regular pick-up game will continue as normal on Monday nights.

1st May 2000

Welcome back after the Easter break! A few announcements:

The Newcastle Herald is doing a feature story on Ultimate Frisbee, and on some of our star players (see below). It should appear in the Saturday edition, so keep an eye out!
Congratulations to Andrew Pennington and Tania King for gaining selection for the Australian teams. They were selected after a very successful Australian Nationals tournament held over Easter at Perth. They will both be off to Germany to represent Australia at the World Ultimate Championships in August.
There are several frisbee tournaments during the next couple of months. So far, they are:
UNSW IV - The first InterVarsity (IV) of the year (ie University tournament). This is planned to be held on Saturday 6th May (although may now be moved to Saturday 13th May). It starts at 9:30 at Centennial Park and will be followed by a round of Pub Golf.
East Oz Dawning - This beach tournament is held each year at Lennox Head. It is a 2 day hat tournament (teams are drawn out of a hat) on the 20th/21st May. Cost: $40 including accommodation.
Savage Sevens - You play seven a side, with no subs, all day, rain hail or shine - that's why its called Savage. This regular fixture will be on again in Centennial Park in June (probably 11th June).
ACU IV - This is being held as a Pre-AUC tournament on the 18th June in North Sydney. Our AUC team will probably attend. More details to come.
AUC 2000 - The big one in Adelaide that we're all waiting for. If you haven't heard about it yet, make sure to talk to Matt or Sturt. It's on July 6th-8th.

If you want further details, or are interested in attending, please contact the club.

Finally, training will start shortly for the Australian University Championships (AUC) in Adelaide. If you are interested, make sure Matt or Sturt know, and listen out for training times.
