Home Up

13th June 2000

Thanks to everyone who came to Savage Sevens yesterday. You should know by tomorrow night how much money we need off you to pay our drivers. Also, if you want to add something to the tournament report on the savage web page, email me or see me a frisbee. It can be anything, a photo, a few lines (you can even write the whole thing if you want!).

AUC Players - please get your money in to Sturt ASAP. He needs some cash to pay the bills (like our accommodation and transport!).

9th June 2000

1. Last minute changes to IV - The venue has been changed to Narremburn Oval, and the cost is now $8 per player. Details on the IV web page (under "Tournaments")

2. AUC next year - This email arrived via the Ultimate-Unis email list from Martin Laird (AFDA universities coordinator and frisbee guru):

Hi all,
Firstly, if you haven't sent the entry form and team rego down to Flinders yet you need to do it straight away: get into your sports association today and make it happen. The later you leave it the more hassle for organisers and the greater your chance of missing out.
However, the subject wasn't a typo: this is mostly about next year's AUC. Australian University Games (AUG) next year is going to be hosted by Sydney Uni, mostly using the Homebush Bay (Olympic) facility. For those who don't know, AUG is the flagship event of university sport, with thousands of student athletes involved. It's basically a whole bunch of AUCs of different sports in the same place in the same week (used to be called IV). I heard many people describe it as the best week of their uni career.
This is the best chance we've had to get into AUG, and probably the best chance we will have for a while, so I'm in the process of putting in a proposal that we be included. At the final manager's meeting last year there was almost unanimous support for pursuing inclusion in AUG, so I'm taking that as a mandate, but thought it was about time I filled you in.
I don't really know what our chances are but hopefully they're reasonable. AUG will probably be held in September. If we get in I think we'll be at Sydney Uni rather than Homebush along with some other field sports as apparently there's a shortage of field space.
I'm planning to propose that we have a 16 team comp. I can foresee however that they might want to limit us to fewer teams, and it may turn out to be the case that not all teams can come, so we may have to have qualifiers. I'll keep you informed as to how that goes. In my opinion I think we should go for what we can get: if for no other reason than that the exposure for Ultimate would be phenomenal.
ok, that's it, just wanted to keep you informed. Of course if we get an offer we can discuss it if necessary before we accept/decline. Any objections/comments/thoughts would be welcome: please send them directly to me and not the list.
cheers,
Martin

3. Email from Sturt:

Hi guys,
This is a quick reminder for people going to Savage sevens. We will meet in Edwards Hall cars park near the large info sign at about 6.10am, and plan to have left by 6.30 am. DON'T BE LATE. We will be driving now as we have enough cars, so there is no need to catch the train.
If possible it would be good if everybody went to bed nice and early and set there alarms so they will wake up in time, like good little children. There's always someone who has to go and get drunk the night before, or forget to set their alarm. Let's see if we can get everybody there on time.
Please.
You will need to bring a light and dark T shirt for the games and probably some warm clothes for the morning when it will be cold. As I have already said, lunch will be provided on the
day. There will most likely be some bread rolls with dip to go in them, as well as lots of fruit. Most people usually have enough to eat.
If we have time we might stop somewhere on the way to get breakfast, but it's probably a good idea to have something to eat before we go. If you think you will get hungry, bring some food - especially for the breaks between the games. Naturally you will need to bring along some liquid to keep you nic
e and hydrated.
If you have any reoccuring injuries then it's probably a good idea to strap them just in case. Especially those people who are going to AUC. (by the way, thanks to everybody who signed up on time) You will also need some money for fuel. This will most likely be some where between $5 and $10. Also, bring along your creative musical talents as you'll need them at the end of each game.
That's about all I can think of at the moment. Have a good weekend, and I'll see you on monday morning bright and early.
If you have any problems like you don't know where Edwards hall car park is, or you can't get there, then email me (I will be checking it all weekend)or call me on 4924 1309.

PS - people going to AUC, don't forget to keep that money coming in.

8th June 2000

Savage Sevens - To save having to leave so early, we are now taking cars down to Sydney. We will be leaving from Edwards Hall car park at 6:15 am. Uniform will consist of a light and a dark (black or navy blue) shirt (We need both in case the opposing team also has this as their uniform). Also please bring $5-10 to pay our drivers for the kind use of their cars.

No game on Monday - That's right, due to the public holiday, the Forum will close early, so there will be no game on Monday night. Games will resume next Wednesday.

AUC registration - Again, please make sure you have been to the Sports Union to register for Adelaide. This MUST be done by Friday.

7th July 2000 (#2)

Urgent update on Savage Sevens!

We received an update from the organiser of Savage Sevens this morning. The first issue is that each player needs to be a member of AFDA (Australian Flying Disc Association). Since this tournament comes under their control, we need to be a member so that we are covered by their sports injury insurance. You can sign up as a member on the day - it costs $40 for the year, or $2.50 for just the one day.

The next issue is the starting time. Apparently, the tournament is starting earlier this year, with a captains meeting at 9am and games starting at 9:30am. This has an effect on our transport arrangements. If we are to catch a train down, we will be leaving from Newcastle station at 5:28am! So, if you have a car we could use (we only need 3), please contact Sturt urgently, either by phone (4924 1309) or see him at training tonight.

The last issue is a more fun one - team names. Unless we want to be called Newcastle1 and Newcastle2, we need to come up with some more exciting names by tomorrow. These will probably be discussed tonight.

Finally, don't forget to pay Sturt your $10 if you haven't already.
